Some of you may have heard that NASA, the American Space Agency, have lost communication with Voyager 2 spacecraft. If not, well, it happened after a wrong command from a ground station which resulted in just 2% shift in antenna aboard Voyager II spacecraft. It resulted in communication loss between the Voyager 2 and earth.
NASA is currently using the huge antenna in Canberra, Australia to hear for any stray signals from Voyager spacecraft. NASA will use the same antenna in next week to bombard the vicinity of voyager 2 in the space with loads of commands. If some or any of them is caught by spacecraft, it will realign its antenna and hopefully communication will reestablish.
However, if NASA remains unsuccessful in the establishing the communication in next week, in October 2023, the Voyager 2 spacecraft is scheduled for next automatic antenna alignment with earth. This will hopefully resolve the issue and reestablish the communication. However, NASA will probably keep trying through other ways to establish the contact sooner than October 2023.
Voyager 2 is the second most distant man-made object from earth, it is 12 billion miles (19 billion Kilometers) away from earth, only behind Voyager 1. Voyager 1 is around 15 billions away right now from earth (23 billion Kilometers). Both of the spacecrafts have left our solar system behind and have already entered the interstellar space.
Voyager 2 spacecraft was launched from earth on August 20, 1977 from Cape Canaveral, Florida while Voyager 1 was launched one month after on September 5, 1977. Originally the space crafts had different names, Mariner 11 and Mariner 12. However, the voyager 12, which was launched later than Mariner 11 (Voyager 2), was renamed to Voyager 1, as it had covered more distance in short time. So in fact the Voyager 2 was launched before the voyager.
As both of Voyager Spacecrafts had to travel very far, both the spacecrafts cary a golden record. With visuals and audio from earth. This record is intended for any intelligent lifeforms, which may catch the spacecraft far in the future. The golden record contains the greeting messages from UN secretary general and president of United states. Information about humans and other species on earth, voices of human baby, whales and lots more. Specially some scientific information and exact location of planet earth in the space, so that those intelligent lifeforms can track us back.
